Marathon Mom

My What Could Be Better? is found in distance running.  I feel like it makes me stronger, not just physically, but mentally as well.  Since I began running I am happier, I am healthier, and I have more energy for my kids.  In fact, I think it makes me a better mom.  It sets the example of being healthy and strong, and I think it is great for my kids to see a grown-up who is still training as an athlete.   I am running these races and I know I will never win, but it is not about that; it is more about me competing against myself and finishing the race.

There is a lot of camaraderie in running. I feel that I am bonded with my running friends on a different level.  I can talk about anything with them. It is a close relationship… I mean, we can talk and laugh about chaffed body parts, and things that only other runners understand. On my first marathon day I experienced some dark moments, but they helped pull me through.  We high fived at each mile, and when we got to mile 24 I squeezed the hand of one of my closest running buddies.  That was all both of us needed to pull through the end of that race.  It is a very special bond.
